Body of Knowledge

The knowledge coverage of doctoral program in pharmacy is highly correlated to both undergraduate and master’s programs in pharmaceutical sciences and technology and in clinical and community pharmacy. The body of knowledge in the doctoral program of pharmacy is multidisciplinary science, which is not only related to medicines, cosmetics, dietary supplement products, medical devices, and other pharmaceutical dosage forms, but also related to applied biological, chemical, physical, and behavioral sciences.

Researches in drug chemistry, including new drug synthesis, analysis, characterization, discovery, and development, are part of the pharmaceutical analysis, food safety and analysis, and medicinal chemistry. Researches in pharmaceutics include pharmaceutical technology, biopharmacy, pharmacokinetics, and pharmaceutical biotechnology. Researches in pharmaceutical biology include phytochemistry, standardization of natural materials, structure elucidation of natural materials, and plant biotechnology. Researches in pharmacology-toxicology include knowledge in pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacotherapy, clinical pharmacy, and drug interaction.

Current Challenges

Globalization era has a big impact on the future of global citizens, including the Indonesian people, which affects all different type of fields. One of them is the development of drug and its dosage forms, which is very much affected by the massive expansion of global trade. According to KKNI, the necessity of highly qualified and competent human resources is currently increasing. This demand has become a serious challenge for the doctoral program in pharmacy to prepare the required human resources and to produce high-quality and applicable research at the same time.

Science and technology in pharmacy and medicinal products are developing rapidly, and this development is marked by the increased numbers of diverse pharmaceutical products and service. The improvement of research and development in pharmaceutical industries will affect a wider segment, which relates to the manufacturing field and to the research and education institutions. These institutions must improve the quality of research and education in order to solve different problems in all related stakeholders. The development of existing and new drugs has shown the importance of science as a fundamental value in achieving the discovery and development of drugs. To date, most of the researches conducted in the universities are less relevant for the industrial research and development. This phenomenon is one of the biggest challenges for School of Pharmacy ITB to be solved together with the stakeholders. Another challenge is the increased demand on highly qualified human resources in pharmaceutical industries, especially in the field of pharmaceutical science and technology. The doctoral program in School of Pharmacy ITB, where the activity is mainly research, has a big role in the development of different aspects related to drug and other pharmaceutical dosage forms.

Objective

Doctor program run at the School of Pharmacy ITB leading to the achievement of graduate competencies as follows: Acquiring skill to design research agenda, conduct research and disseminate the research product at national or international level; acquiring skill in leading the implementation of research in academic or technical management interdisciplinary in the university, research institution, government, industry, etc.

Eligible Candidates

Candidate for doctoral program comes from master in pharmacy study or in related sciences, graduated from domestic or overseas universities.

In the same field mean graduated from master of pharmacy education program, minimal GPA>3.0, TOEFL score > 475 and Academic Potential Test > 450. For ITB bachelor graduate having GPA > 3.5 (Cum Laude) can directly apply for doctor program. Doctorate student are obliged to pass the compulsory and elective courses; the courses to be attended have to be recommended by academic supervisor or head of research group.

Curriculum

Doctor program curriculum consists of compulsory and elective courses, research proposal writing, qualification exam, and research project (dissertation) proposal.
